Default Why cant i get down FAST...???

I can snatch (get under) as fast as anyone. I'm no freak, but i'm not slow. I was pretty goddamn musclebound when i started this, but i dont like weaknesses, and i'm fanatical about addressing them. I've gotten a LOT better at this. Upper body flexibility is still nowhere near some ov you guys, but it doesn't impede my snatching or jerks... it just keeps me from losing lifts behind, which frankly, i'm fine with.

The fastest lifter that i personally know, is fast. He is nearing that 'teleport' speed under the bar. He suggested drop snatches, as that is what he used to get his magical ability. The more i do, the better i get, he's been right so far. But it is NOT my upper body size or flexibility that impedes me getting down fast. Its my knees.

LOWER body is the problem. My knees, which are completely healthy mind you, just go down only so fast. I can snap into a just-above parallel drop snatch, or snatch for that matter, then ride it down the last few inches, but dropping fully into rock-bottom in either exercise just doesn't easily happen. My lower body flexibility is definitely good.

Good is not good enough. How do i get the lower body to be Taner Sagir or Lu Xiaojun-fast...???

I have a problem thinking that some people just cannot do these things, and that others are so gifted their abilities cannot be learned, or at least approached.

first: realize that this reactive strength of getting under the bar takes some time.

second: the better your pull at the hips, the faster you will get down, at least in my experience. Big explosion when the bar as at the hips (in snatch), and follow through with the elbows (high and out). Always leads to an almost-superhuman drop under the bar.

Like Andy says, it's a reaction speed you're talking about, more so than mechanical strength and this will only get better with practice. How about the flexibility of your hamstring at the origin and glutes/lower back?

I was reading on sportivny press that the bigger difference between quad and hamstring strength, and lack of hamstring strength in general, will lead to you being slower under the bar, to an extent of course.
This makes sense to me as I squat a lot more than I pull, and I am slow as treacle under my power jerks, so I will experiment and see.

Whip your whole body around the bar rather than dropping under the bar. When you explode like mentioned above, sling your body underneath the bar like it is a static piece. I feel fast when I get it. When I do not, people comment on how it looks like I was just waiting for a minute before dropping under. It can feel a little un-nerving at times.

This whip also helps elbow/ rack speed in the clean.

I feel your pain - when I was younger I wanted a fastball like Nolan Ryan's - hey I was 6'3" and skinny just like he was.

While I agree that abilities can be learned not everyone can throw a 101 mph baseball, run a sub 10 100 like Usain Bolt, or drop under a bar as fast as Taner Sagir. I think it really is part nature and part nurture.

That being said let's work on the nurturing part so we can get as fast as WE can get:

"...Grant to us the serenity of mind to accept that which cannot be changed; courage to change that which can be changed, and wisdom to know the one from the other..."

Soooooo much this!!!!!

Every time I snatch and Clean and Jerk, I have to accept that my 41 year old 118kg body likely will never lift as much as Tatiana Kashirinia.

But that does NOT mean I'm going to stop performing the movements. I always encourage others to get the most out of what they were given. Moreover, with systematic training, effort, hard work, and consistency you can overcome any obstacle. Even the oldies among us. We just have to toss our ego aside and do more GPP and the ocassional, heaven forbid, bodybuilding movement.

All the best,
Arden

I've noticed the harder I hit with my hips the faster I go under.

Why does bodybuilding movement bring so much shame lol. Maybe the chinese are 1 step ahead of everyone when it comes to hypertrophy. Since they come in competitions at what it looks to be 6-8% body fat, especially lu xiaojun.
